  • That was only an intermediate goal to help you get to your real goal....

    • Assumed you were going to suggest ECT.

      • We'll see when I retire soon. I wonder if I'll have any issues. My current goal is just not to have to work anymore. I haven't thought beyond that.
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to keep busy. I've been doing things for SOOO LONG I don't think I'll require that, but we'll see.

        • ECT should not be feared, but it should only be used if your doctor thinks it is really necessary.

My mother retired this past summer and has struggled some with finding a way to occupy the day. Probably doesn't help that my dad is still working.

In fact, the last time I went to the psychiatrist he suggested TMS. But from what I can gather online, TMS is not a magical anti-depression bullet, just something different from the standard crop of SSRIs. No one's ever suggested ECT for me. The closest thing there is to a miracle drug is, as JM suggested above, ketamine.

              • I'd hate to retire than find out i miss work.. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
That shouldn't happen. I really used to love it, but now, not so much. Too much management crap. I miss those days of 12 hours straight coding and solving a problem. Or code diving and finding that needle in the haystack error. Harping on people to show up on time and attend to their personal hygiene or sit in day long strategy meetings where nothing strategic every happens aren't as much fun. I can still get away with some development under the guise that I'm doing process improvement but sometimes they catch on.

                • Be involved in a start-up. Or do some other side projects.

                  • Watching Netflix is just research for writing. Personally, there are a lot of things that I have wanted to explore and see that I have not because I am still working. Many of them are even within walking distance.

                    • I don't think I'd want to put the effort needed for a start up but Maybe some consulting development on a side project. I'm sure a couple of my clients at work would jump at the idea of me working on a few projects. But still, I'm really looking forward to not having any responsibilities. I've raised my daughter, provided security for my family, I've done my share. It's time to take back. But will I go crazy?

                        • If I miss it that much, I can always do some volunteer work and give back to the community. Volunteer work is always good because even if you're not great at it, no one is likely to give you any abuse about it.

                          • I know how to fix Lori. But it is too far "out of bounds" and "too schizophrenic." It has nothing to do with worshiping Sumerian Gods like AAHZ does either. Or maybe it does and that's why it actually works for me.

Everything is simple, once you know the tricks. Feel bad for you, Lori. Guess we all walk our own path.

This is an excellent idea. So would getting a hobby he really enjoys so that way he has more than just work and sleep. Who knows? A hobby might even grt him to meet new friends or even a girlfriend. The side projects would also help him make more money.

                              • I think JM was talking to rah there, but either way, hobbies and side projects and all that are several steps beyond me at the moment. Just to give you an idea of where I am right now. Sometimes I'll be lying in bed, not sleeping, just staring at the ceiling for an hour. Eventually, I'll get tired of being in that position and decide to roll over so that I'm staring at the wall. It might then be several minutes before I'm able to translate that desire into actually moving.
