Well, if you haven't read the Gospels you should just say so. I think your CliffsNotes version left out crucial plot points: the man spent most of his ministry railing against the religious authorities of his day, annoying them so much that they arrested him on trumped-up charges and put him to death in the most gruesome manner they knew.

You were referring to the OT (Old Testament to the old people among us who are unable to understand relevant abbreviations ) as pre-Christian stuff. I was reminding you that there's no sect that rejects the authority of that section of the Bible. Before I forget, I should mention (purely out of compassion) that NT means New Testament in this context.

Once we drop the tabloid-style rewrite of what the Gospels had to say, it turns out that the man argued for forgiveness of sins, poverty, charity, and the eschewing of violence. In the bible story, he was arrested and executed on trumped-up charges, not on accurate charges. They had to resort to trumped-up charges because he was so "docile, quiet, and inoffensive" that no real charges would have stuck.
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty…we will be remembered in spite of ourselves… The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the last generation… We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.

Yes, the Old Testament predates Christianity. That is precisely my point. What that has to do with the New Testament is still not clear.

If you are arguing that the OT still applies to Christians, I'd dispute that. Christians seem to treat the OT as a smorgasbord, calling certain sections of it valid when it suits their purposes, and invalid when it doesn't suit their purposes. I don't think that any of them, however, accept as valid the portions (like that Leviticus quote) that directly contradict what Jesus is supposed to have said.

            • The relationship between the OT and NT is complicated and varies widely from Church to Church. There is good Biblical precedent, largely rooted in Acts and Paul's epistles, for invalidating most of the Law, but not the entire OT. For example, the Council of Jerusalem decided that fornication of all kinds is still out, along with eating blood and idolatry. It's not just picking and choosing, there are very complex schools of exegesis, and you're being glib.

It is very convenient to atheists that we Xians "not judge," i.e. be doormats. If we stand up for any principle at all, we can be called hypocrites (unless we use the blandest and most timid language possible); if we do not, we can be ignored.

                          • What, and live in self-contained, isolated communities, trusting that a state we're not invested in will have our best interests in mind? That worked out great for the Jews.

Well according to the apostle only those who live by faith in Jesus Christ. The Jews maybe an exception, but I'm not opening that.
