  • Lori has a car problem.

My neighbor backed into my parked car this evening and left quite a gash. She was nice enough to knock on my door and inform me of it. She gave me all of her insurance info and that stuff. So, what's next? Do I go to a mechanic and get an estimate, or do I just call my insurance company and have them deal with it, or do I call the police and get her ass thrown in jail?

Possibly relevant factoid: She's cute. Maybe this can be the funny story we tell our grandchildren?

Back into her car, then go inform her about it. That way the relationship will start on an even footing. Ask her on a date. The story will be 2x as funny.

I'm really unclear on the protocol here. Is it considered rude to go through insurance if it can instead just be handled by the writing of a check? Should I go through insurance automatically in order to avoid this becoming some long, drawn out thing? I've been driving for 10 years, but this is the first time I've been involved in anything even remotely resembling an accident.

Call your insurance and report the accident to them. They'll handle the rest and tell you where you can get your car fixed.

Get an estimate from your insurance company. If the amount is not too different from her deductible, let her know. She may want to pay out of pocket to avoid a rate hike on her insurance.

Will this end up costing me anything, or does the fact that she copped to it immediately mean I'm in the clear?

So I can get an estimate from my insurance company without necessarily going all the way through with the claim?

Yes. And, since she copped to it, it should cost you nothing (unless her coverage is so low it will not cover the entire cost of your repair).

Called my insurance. Called her insurance. The claims adjuster will contact me on Monday. I was expecting something more.

If it is of any consolation: i felt the world spinning slower for a few seconds.

That's a sign of a pretty serious neurological condition. You should go see a doctor immediately.

Last one's been dating some guy named Chad for a few months now. I think she'll be okay.
