  • Winnipeg's Jaring Timmerman, swimming world record holder, dies at 105

    http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...ce=d-top-story

I swam at the same pool as Mr. Timmerman. He was setting records (for his age group) up until a few months ago.

Breaking News: Macaulay Culkin Found Dead at Age 34

Sources are reporting that Macaulay Culkin, best known for his role as Kevin McCallister in Home Alone and sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has been found dead at the age of 34.

Multiple unconfirmed reports say Culkin was found dead Friday afternoon in his Manhattan apartment after police responded to a wellness check requested by a family member.

At least one occupant of the Manhattan apartment confirmed the apartment belongs to Culkin but police have not confirmed the man's identity at this time.

"The apartment was exceptionally clean and we found no signs of abuse or foul-play so we are depending on the coroner to make a final ruling of what happened here today," said Det. James Patterson, of the Manhattan Police Department.

Born August 26, 1980, Culkin began acting at the tender age of four. At the height of his fame, he was regarded as the most successful child actor since Shirley Temple.

This story is still developing. More details will be made available once they emerge.

              • Former Chicago mayor Jane Byrne has died at the age of 81. Her rise to power was quirky and circumstantial, and an interesting chapter in the storied history of Chicago mayoral politics. From wiki:

In 1968, Daley appointed her head of Chicago's consumer affairs department. Byrne held that post until she was fired by Mayor Michael Bilandic in 1977. After her firing, Byrne launched a campaign to unseat Bilandic in the 1979 Democratic mayoral primary, the real contest in this heavily Democratic city.

At first, political observers believed her to have little chance of winning. However, a series of major snowstorms in January paralyzed the city and caused Bilandic to be seen as an ineffective leader. Jesse Jackson endorsed Byrne. Many Republican voters voted in the Democratic primary in order to beat Mayor Bilandic and the Democratic "Machine". Infuriated voters in the North Side and Northwest Side retaliated against Bilandic for the Democratic Party's slating of only South Side candidates for the mayor, clerk, and treasurer (the outgoing city clerk, John C. Marcin, was from the Northwest Side).

These four factors combined to give Byrne a razor-thin 51% to 49% victory over Bilandic in the primary.[2] She then won the general election with 82 percent of the vote, still the largest margin in a Chicago mayoral election.
To this day, Jane Byrne is credited with ensuring that Chicago streets get plowed quickly and effectively after a major snowfall. RIP.

Jane Byrne, with an assist from mighty snowstorms and a tone-deaf Chicago mayor who preceded her, will forever be known as the feisty woman who in 1979 toppled Chicago’s formidable Democratic…

What an incredible career... one of the very few people to have won the grand slam of media awards: Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy.
One of America’s most decorated directors, Mr. Nichols had a protean résumé of critic- and crowd-pleasing work, including “The Graduate” in film and “The Odd Couple” on stage.

                            • PD James, one of my favourite light reads, joins Conan Doyle and Christie.

                              http://www.cbc.ca/books/2014/11/pd-j...way-at-94.html

According to P.D. James' publisher, Faber & Faber, the acclaimed British mystery writer has died. She passed away in her home in Oxford, England, on Thursday, November 27.

Phyllis Dorothy James White was the author of 20 books, most of which have been turned into film or television productions. She rose to fame for her series of detective novels featuring the investigator/poet Adam Dalgliesh of New Scotland Yard. The first of the Dalgliesh novels, Cover Your Face, was published in 1962.

Her acclaimed 1992 dystopian novel Children of Men was made into a feature film by Alfonso Cuarón, starring Julianne Moore and Clive Owen.

James worked in government service in the U.K., including the National Health Service and the Home Office, from the 1940s until her retirement in 1979.
