      • Author/activist, Farley Mowat has died.

        http://www.thestar.com/entertainment...ead_at_92.html

Outspoken writer of 45 books, including the popular Never Cry Wolf, was famed for his unwavering, fearless focus on protecting nature.
Acclaimed Canadian author and outspoken environmentalist Farley Mowat died Tuesday at 92 — only days shy of his 93rd birthday.

His family has not issued a statement, but his brother John requested privacy for the family, while the author’s website noted: “To allow for Farley’s family and friends to mourn, book sales will be suspended until further notice.”

The author, whose famous books on nature such as Never Cry Wolf delighted readers for five decades, was still active in campaigns to protect nature in his beloved country right up to the end. In fact he was recently quoted on CBC’s The Current, complaining in his trademark indignant and energetic manner about a plan to increase Wi-Fi service in Canada’s national parks...

Teenager Stephen Sutton, who raised more than £3.2m for the Teenage Cancer Trust, has died in hospital. Announcing his death, his mother Jane said: "My heart is bursting with pride but breaking with pain for my courageous, selfless, inspirational son."...

"He was determined not to waste a minute, not to waste an hour or a day," the prime minister told reporters. "I can hardly think of anyone I have met with such a zest for life, with such a belief that you can get things done, and who wanted to live every minute. He was absolutely inspiring, he did extraordinary things for charity, and meeting him was a huge privilege."...

With updates happening so seldom and there being no cohesive running list of the points standings, I wonder if our "New Management" might consider at least placing a notice in the thread on those rare occasions when scores are updated...

                  • I have posted when I've updated. It's finals week. You're not getting another update until that's over (so sometime this weekend). Now please kindly cut it out with the passive agressive bull**** thanks.

                    • Actually, you tend to post promises (see "sometime this weekend" above) rather than "updates posted xx/yy/zz". Which is why this was a legit request and not *just* passive-aggressive bull****.

Wishing you great success on your finals.

                        • Meanwhile, in L.A., the drought has meant wild animals wandering into suburbs looking for food and water like this local black bear.

It reminds of an event from about a year ago where an elderly Scottish couple, who were visiting family, ended up with a close encounter with a local black bear. The man, about 80, walked out the front door of their relative's home, with in a few feet of a black bear, without even knowing it though it was caught on CCTV, then his wife, also in her 80's, walked out the front door but noticed the bear. She screamed and ran for the car while the bear seemed scared and ran away from them before coming back and sniffing around their car. Eventually animal control showed up and shewed away the bear.

                          • Poland's last Communist leader Wojciech Jaruzelski dies

                            http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27567079

Poland's last Communist leader General Wojciech Jaruzelski has died aged 90 after a long illness, Polish media say.

Gen Jaruzelski led Poland from 1981, when he declared martial law and ordered the arrest of the pro-democracy Solidarity leader Lech Walesa.

But he lifted martial law two years later and after growing unrest was forced to negotiate with Solidarity in 1989.

He had been in ill health for some time.

Mr Walesa said that a "great man from a generation of betrayers has gone".

Gen Jaruzelski fought in a Polish unit of the Russian army during World War Two and rose up the military ranks after the war to become chief "political officer" of Poland's armed forces.
