lots of social advances have been won, or helped by, protests, strikes, civil disobedience and yes, even violence.

(and this is also a response to dd's post 66) the point is not so much to win hearts and minds with the action itself, but rather to get people thinking and talking about the issue. because, with women's rights, like say, universal suffrage or slavery, once people start asking and discussing the question "should women have control over their own bodies?" it's fairly clear which side is going to win. there are arguments against women having control of their bodies, but those arguments, like those in favour of slavery or against universal suffrage, are actually pretty weak.

Sorry, but defacing churches isn't a solution. They only got away with it because the government desn't particularly like the RCC (because the RCC doesn't support them politically).
I also think you overestimate the political influence of the RCC over here... After all, they were unable to stop the gay marriage law. Acts like this don't really help their cause, since whoever approves of crap like this already supports them, and it only pushes people who are in the middle away.
