In Jamestown the English chose a dirty marshland which ended up weakening or killing colonists. The Pilgrims further north were clueless about survival skills and had to be taught by the natives. There was most likely no wild turkey on the menu (the grossly enlarged virtually flightless creature now consumed is a product of selective breeding) and no pumpkin pie- 'cos they didn't have any butter or wheat to make a traditional pie. I doubt any of them would have been able to make a pastry out of cornmeal.
