  • i agree with that, however there's more to it than the legal side. if an independent scotland decided to walk away from the national debt, there are many ways in which the rest of the UK could make things difficult; by playing hardball over oil, vetoing EU membership, pension rights etc. it seems a very unlikely scenario, as it's clearly in both sides' interests to keep the discussion amicable.

It was also used for left handed people, and in some countries where lavatory paper is not in constant use, the left hand is used to dispose of poop.

Depends on when it is said. Before a vote, it appears to me the SNP thinks its best interest is to make it unamicable, in order to get a confrontation that will engender nationalist/separationist sentiment. After the vote, they may reconcile, but at the moment it seems "independence at any cost" is a clear but unstated policy theme.

          • i think a lot depends on how much of that is electioneering and how much is serious (from both sides). i suspect most of it is the former, and after a yes vote, both sides would moderate their positions. however it will be interesting to see how things develop.

            • Well Barroso has now made it pretty clear that an independent Scotland would have no easy route into the EU. Salmond responds by calling this preposterous'..

                  • For all we care he could have compared to the Cardassians and the Bojarons and it still wouldn't have changed the fact that Scotland has to reapply for EU membership.

Surprised Salmond did not say he was a Westminster stooge.

                            • I'm guessing that Scotland secession + EU accession would set a bad precedent for any EU members with separatist groups, like Spain with the Basques and Catalans, so they'd resist allowing some sort of fast track. No NATO, No EU, No UK currency union--nothing seems to be working out for the poor SNP. It's almost as if this attempt at Balkanizing the British Isles doesn't really make any sense.
