Why recording police is neccesary for liberty

I don't really understand the novel writing month. It seems like trying to land the space shuttle before you learn to drive a car. Why a novel? Why not a short story?

I'm guessing it's just for the sake of getting a lot of writing practice. Writing a short story every day would work too I suppose.

Anywho, the point of NaNoWriMo, for me, is to practice a very specific writing skill: the skill of conquering the white page. (I practice other writing skills in other months.)

Edit: Additionally, plenty of writers will tell you that writing novels and writing short stories are very different skills. Some will even tell you that writing a short story is harder than writing a novel. So one is not necessarily a substitute for another, unless all you're trying to do is learn how to write good prose.
