The Shame of the Cities and the Shade of LBJ

After the Medicare/Medicaid catastrophe the single greatest policy failure of modern America is urban policy. Since the Great Society era of Lyndon Johnson, the country has poured hundreds of billions of dollars into poor urban neighborhoods. The violence and crime generated in these neighborhoods costs hundreds of billions more. And after all this time, all this money and all this energy, the inner city populations are worse off than before. There is more drug addiction and more social and family breakdown among this population than when the Great Society was launched. Incarceration rates have risen to levels that shock the world (though they make for safer streets); the inner city abortion rate has reached levels that must surely appall even the most resolute pro-choicers not on the Planned Parenthood payroll. Forty percent of all pregnancies in New York end in abortion, with higher rates among Blacks; nationally, the rate among Blacks is three times the rate among white women. Put it all together and you have a holocaust of youth and hope on a scale hard to match.

This is not a lot to show for almost fifty years of fighting poverty - not a lot of bang for the buck.

We need to do better. The state of the American inner city is an unacceptable human tragedy, and the costs in money spent and prosperity forfeited create an unsustainable drag on the national economy at a time when we need all the help we can get.

Reports of multiple indications of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake. - Now that is meaningful.

It has a lot of meaning to people who actually study that stuff I imagine.

Yes. If they said that Food Insecurity meant experiencing "Reports of multiple indications of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake" people would understand that and it would have a lot more meaning. In an attempt to make the problem seem to apply to 49 million instead of 7 million, they have diluted the meaning to the point where people like Reg don't care about it. I would like to think that a problem that affects 7 million people would still be enough to get him to care about it.

The old maxim if a joke needs to be explained then its not a good one, works here.

Number of bathrooms was an inside joke as an uninspired forum troll means to adhom Kuciwalker.

Since HC is Kuciwalkers brother, apparently the same joke can apply.

Since you are HC's DL or vice versa, the joke can apply.

Since the joke is so convoluted it is a FAIL.

              He's actually HC's (and Kuci's) older brother.

A lot of people think that the level above Very Low is still very bad.

reports of reduced quality, variety, or desirability of diet. Little or no indication of reduced food intake.

Self reporting and subjective terms such as quality and desirability make that level a bit fuzzy. Little or no indication of reduced food intake is much more concrete.

A bit fuzzy, but when you're talking about millions of people I imagine strict definitions are difficult when you're trying to define a handful of categories. Poor folk getting by on a limited range of ****ty processed foods because they can't afford decent stuff is still pretty important.

                            Reg is the older brother?

I thought he was HC's twin.

How many of them are there?

I suspect a child could be starving to death in front of him and he wouldn't give a ****. He'd probably tell the kid to get a job.
