        "food insecurity"

As in, people aren't actually hungry but we need to pretend they are to keep getting donations/work up political outrage/whatever so we'll say they're at risk of hunger.

The proliferation of that term is sufficient demonstration that hunger is no longer a problem here.

Ah, the words of someone who doesn't know anyone who is food insecure.

While people in advanced economies are most bearish about their economic situation, they report very low levels of deprivation relative to others around

The United States is a clear outlier from this pattern. Despite being the richest country in the survey, nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) say they had trouble putting food on the table in the past 12 months. This reported level of deprivation is closer to that in Indonesia or Greece rather than Britain or Canada.
There is no problem, HUR HUR!

So, are they actually not getting sufficient food?

(I already know the answer to this and it is "no")

Depends on if you thinking skipping meals counts (but they are just dieting!!)

Food insecurity is defined by so broad a question that it is almost meaningless. Arthritic fingers would give a person "trouble putting food on the table". BTW - I think the original picture looks kind of funny. Did it artificially enlarge the mouth and teeth?
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

                      Or not.

USDA's labels describe ranges of food security
                      Food Security

High food security (old label=Food security): no reported indications of food-access problems or limitations.
Marginal food security (old label=Food security): one or two reported indications--typically of anxiety over food sufficiency or shortage of food in the house. Little or no indication of changes in diets or food intake.

                      Food Insecurity

Low food security (old label=Food insecurity without hunger): reports of reduced quality, variety, or desirability of diet. Little or no indication of reduced food intake.
Very low food security (old label=Food insecurity with hunger): Reports of multiple indications of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake.

What the **** is food security

Why do I care if they're actually getting adequate nutrition (which they are)

Who cares if he sometimes ran out of toilet paper? As long as he had more than enough toilet paper on average why should I care?
