Uneducated simpletons like yourself seem to misconstrue what it means to be a professor at top universities, perhaps because you were too dumb to ever gain admission to these universities. Being a tenured professor means little more than that you are smart, very unattractive and probably underappreciated, since you are making about $100,000-200,000 when you could make three times that in the private sector. It also means that, unlike other equally smart people who were attractive (and so had to go to the private sector to raise a family with their smoking hot wife), you cannot be fired for anything you say, including being completely wrong, unless what you say is that the Jews did 9/11 (this is known as the "Jew Exception," but apparently it does not apply at Carnegie Mellon). Taken together, these facts reduce the "consequences" of talking out of the ass, and create an environment in which talking out of the ass in fact is "rewarded," because 99.9% of the world assumes that smart people can never be wrong about anything. This is why THE NOBEL-PRIZE WINNING Paul Krugman has a column about things HE DID NOT WIN A NOBEL PRIZE IN, and why a mob did not force Stephen Hawking to suffocate on his own vomit when he made purile, largely robotic statements about mass extinction and global environmental policy.

The IPCC report is about as clear and uncontroversial a scientific consensus as you can get in the world of science.

          It's the UN Wiggy.

****ing things up is what they do. They have lots of practice and have become very good at it.

            2. It's one of many predictions, including the prediction that we would have fewer. At this point, the whole global warming movement has observed every and any variation in weather patterns to be attributable to climate change. It's like a horoscope. Hence my aphorism that when you have already made your conclusion, everything appears to be evidence.

There is no science in global warming anymore. It's politics and activism, bordering on religion.
            Enjoy.

            —
Thomas C. Peterson, Martin P. Hoerling, Peter A. Stott, and Stephanie C. Herring

Attribution of extreme events is a challenging science and one that is currently undergoing considerable evolution. In this paper are 19 analyses by 18 different research groups, often using quite different methodologies, of 12 extreme events that occurred in 2012. In addition to investigating the causes of these extreme events, the multiple analyses of four of the events, the high temperatures in the United States, the record low levels of Arctic sea ice, and the heavy rain in northern Europe and eastern Australia, provide an opportunity to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the various methodologies. The differences also provide insights into the structural uncertainty of event attribution, that is, the uncertainty that arises directly from the differences in analysis methodology. In these cases, there was considerable agreement between the different assessments of the same event. However, different events had very different causes. Approximately half the analyses found some evidence that anthropogenically caused climate change was a contributing factor to the extreme event examined, though the effects of natural fluctuations of weather and climate on the evolution of many of the extreme events played key roles as well.

Wiggy : That Fred Singer guy used to work for the tobacco companies saying their products didn't kill you before he got the climate denier gig.

He's memorable because he's one of the few deniers with actual scientific credentials.

Let me know when the Chinese and Indians are on board. Then we can talk.

I've no interest in screwing my economy for symbolic reasons.

As global demand for energy increases, it's going to become more cost effective to be energy efficient. We've got an opportunity in the richest countries to become leaders in those technologies.

It's an opportunity to make a lot of money in the next 30 years I think.

The market will sort that out.

Yeah, 'cause the energy market is one that national governments totally stay out of, don't subsidise and allow the market to work on isn't it.

But despite that, it already is.

I get really perturbed when thousands upon thousands of climate change "experts" take jets to the world's vacation spots (Acapulco was a nice one) then proceed to lecture me on how I need to consume less.

                            Priceless.
