          • Korea and Vietnam? Hardly self-destructive...maybe not productive, but it never resulted in enemy forces occupying land tens of miles from the capital.

No-one starts aggressive wars that they know they can't win. They certainly didn't.

The Japanese did. And so did Egypt and Syria.

                • Korea was quite productive. Too bad we didn't save the whole country, but saving the South was definitely a worthwhile venture

The example he gave was the war of southern stupidity.

                        • Parts of the Japanese government knew they couldn't win it (the IJN). The IJA thought it was winnable. Yamamoto knew that there was basically only one shot at success, which was wiping out the US Pacific Fleet at the outset. That didn't happen.

The Japanese thought America would get tired of fighting and give up. It's like you're saying North Vietnam fought a war they knew they couldn't win.

I don't think this is true. I think they expected to be able to wipe out the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. But the IJN knew the US would be able to rebuild it in a few months.
