Exactly. When folks mention "Dixie", they usually aren't considering the technical details of some centuries-old surveyors' work; they are referring to certain cultural and historical attributes held by Americans living south of a certain latitude, and east (for the most part) of a certain riverLast edited by The Mad Monk; November 5, 2013, 17:06.No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Southern culture, the southern accent and dialectical attributes, and slave ownership match up almost 100% with the North American climatic zones. Anywhere that has a humid subtropical climate is generally going to be Southern. This is not at all a coincidence. The climate dictated the economy up until relatively recently, and humid subtropical zones were best suited to growing cash crops.
The growth of the Northeast Corridor through Wilmington, Baltimore, and Washington messes things up a bit but outside of that relatively narrow but densely populated band, it's still very Dixie.

To be fair, it does seem unfair to leave out Louisiana (& Arkansas) out of Dixie.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

As a definite geographic location within the United States, "Dixie" is usually defined as the 11 Southern states that seceded to form the Confederate States of America. They are (in order of secession): South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
Texas... more southern than Maryland.
