The simple fact is that the government needs a combination of less spending and more revenue to get us out of the hole we are in (or at least to make it reasonable). The second simple fact is that the income disparity between the rich and the middle class is as high as it has been since right before the depression. The third simple fact is that the economy does do better when the income disparity is less.

Finally, for those that want to center on the fact that Gross "feels guilty" instead of the simple economic truth he espouses then you need to ask yourself the same question Sava asked you...

The gap you seem so concerned about has widened as much as it has under the watch of an Administration that claimed to be most concerned with said gap. It would seem that focusing on policies that foster growth rather than simply falling for a simplistic call to raise taxes (given the fact none of the calls are paired with any reform of the tax code) would be a more productive use of time

I don't disagree with this, but it is clear that something needs to be done to close the gap on the fiscal budget as well as the income disparity. I am a proponent of a muti faceted strategy...not just tax increases on the wealthy. The facts, however, show that those tax increases are clearly needed. Why do you think that they aren't?

The rich don't have nearly enough money to support the level at which spending has gone up over the course of this Administration.

Spending has technically gone down, relative to GDP.

The deficit has grown mostly because of the Bush tax cuts.

Since much of my income is earned, my tax rate is probably as high as it gets. Can I afford to pay more? Sure. Do I trust the govt. to spend wisely? Not so much.

What has it done for that even to be a serious question?

The only time that discretionary federal spending has gone down in decades has been a result of the sequester in the Obama Admin. Something that had to be shoved down his throat.
