They do indeed set up those in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were replacing them with mobile home units with showers and ****ters back in 2004 but those were just for the larger bases while folks at forward operating bases had to still use porta-potties. I was lucky because we got an apartment in one of Saddam's palace complexes so we had a regular bathroom (one shared by a dozen people including two women) but it was still a step up from the porta-potties especially since it was inside a concrete building which offered protection in the event of a mortar attack.

That's the poo pond. It's a circular pond of raw sewage in the middle of Kandahar Airfield. It's 200 yards across and surprisingly deep. I think they're finally draining it after, oh, 11 years?

I think there's a DFAC (dining facility) and some living quarters right next to it. It's right smack in the middle of the base. Like the geometric center. Obviously I haven't experienced it personally, but yes, all accounts indicate that the smell is indeed horrible.
