Actually, American tourists are pretty well-regarded (despite being a bunch of fat idiots) because they're generous with their money. Much better than the Germans (who are fat and cheap) or the Brits (who are cheap and loutish).

I've actually heard tourists from other countries complain about Americans because they insist on tipping staff and generally are so stupid they over pay for things and the tourists from other countries blame Americans for getting the locals used to asking for tips and/or raising prices because the Americans aren't used to bargaining prices down. Sadly, Americans are used to seeing the listed price and paying the listed price while tourists from Europe or Asian usually bargain down the price and they get pissed off when Americans get the locals used to flat rate pricing.

So Europeans have so little self-respect and dignity that they happily welcome American jerks because American jerks spend more money than other jerks?

If the guy is rather clueless and jerkish but is willing to spend a lot of money at your restaurant/store then most service sector employees will over look the fact that they're fat, stupid jerks. Especially if they leave a large tip when virtually no European normally tips.
