I've yet to finish a classic game. It seems about half way, I get my team well-equipped and all high-level, only to get my ass handed to me in a single mission. All of a sudden, my guys can't hit and the enemy can't miss. Since I only play this game on ironman, this is fairly devastating. I'm taking a break from my current game where I lost half of my team before pulling a hasty retreat.

Always try to level up a B team as well.

Consider half-cover as bad as no cover at all.

Are the missions all the same? Or do they change (procedural generation?) with each playthrough?

I'd probably start over with a new game if I knew I wouldn't have to slog through missions I've beaten already.
To us, it is the BEAST.

This. I'd much rather have two captains that one colonel.

The half-cover rule only applies on classic and up. Half cover is just fine on normal and easy.

On my classic playthrough I only had one team, did fine.

Yup. Especially since most of the really powerful upgrades are around that rank anyway; Snipers are really the only class that get a really stupendously awesome upgrade at colonel.

Good point; sniper is the only class where I try to get one soldier to colonel as quickly as possible. For every other class, you need to spread those promotions out.

Missions are different with each playthrough, except for a small handful of event based story missions.

                        They aren't procedurally-generated, but you'll see different maps/alien groups/spawning points.

Also, if you get a terror mission that appears to be taking place on an army base, PREPARE YOUR ANUS.

I hate the city hall terror mission far more, especially if there are Chryssalids involved.

I do pretty good with that one. Lots of ways to attack that one.

The military base? Nope. Big ass chokepoint, and it invariably doesn't show up until after the cyberdisks have started OR it introduces them, and my best sniper and heavy are recovering from wounds.
