  • Forbes: Wal-Mart shoots self in foot, decides health care is good

(Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife) Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest employer, announced Monday that 35,000 part-time employees will soon be moved to full-time status, entitling them to the full healthcare benefits that were scheduled to be denied them as a result of Wal-Mart's efforts to avoid the requirements of Obamacare. While some [...]

It may be a clever enough dodge to cut employees below the 30 hours per week in order to avoid the expectations of Obamacare, but the move comes at a substantial price to be paid in lost revenue and profits. Given that the entire point of business is to show a profit, it is only a matter of time before employers learn what Home Depot learned some years ago and what Wal-Mart is slowly beginning to figure out—you get what you pay for.

Cut back on employees and you will, eventually, cut back on your profits as the savings a business creates by cutting worker hours leads to greatly decreased sales as customer satisfaction disappears.

While there are no shortage of Americans who enjoy deriding the Affordable Care Act as a ‘job killer’, what will soon emerge—and sooner than you may think—is an understanding that the losses experienced by businesses that cut worker hours will far exceed whatever is gained by avoiding giving employees the healthcare benefits their families so badly require.
Takeaway: Yes, that's right, there are levels of service so low that even Wal-mart customers will leave.

You don't think this cuts into their profits and therefore growth? And even if walmart restores some of their fulltimers, there are still dozens of restaurant chains that will not. It's killing jobs left and right.

            a) That wasn't my takeaway. You're burying the lede with this argument.
            b) You might want to read the post, as it is asserting that-while full time cuts into their profits-it doesn't hurt them as much as part-time workers do.

HC has reading comprehension issues. The "it's killing jobs" talking point is so drilled into his head, he can't see past it.

If I get the arguments right, then the companies won't hire people because they can't get enough profit by exploiting workers under obamacare. Sounds reasonable, so they invest their money in more profitable businesses like putting the money under the bed.

Btw, I really like that you think it's fine that companies won't pay for obamacare and at the same time won't pay their workers enough so they can pay their health insurances.

Anyway, let those companies that can't handle such die and let new companies that can do business under the new conditions rise - that's better for society
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Wal-Mart executives are getting what they pay for.

Who knew that treating workers like human beings, paying them better, and providing benefits makes for more productive, happier employees that in turn improve profits and customer satisfaction?

Well, it's all a matter of perspective. The nets are a bad thing for those who's lives have been deemed worse than death perhaps. Imagine the disappointment of having to go to work again in the morning ...

Just as the steel bars that don't allow children to escape from the clothing factory in case of fire are simply preventing any of them from having to be treated for burns ... it is a very thoughtful measure!

I'm not sure I understand why Wal-Mart didn't hire just more workers to compensate for to less hours the original staff puts in. Most supermarkets around here have a good deal of employees working part-time or in temp jobs and they don't suffer from empty aisles or bad service.
