  • Nobody's interested in taking away cars but a lot of people support taking away guns. Confiscation of weapons has happened in many places, most recently New Zealand with upcoming recategorization of certain semi-automatic rifles.

Gun registries being used to assist in disarming the populace isn't some kind of conspiracy theory, it's something that's happened and it has happened a lot. Gun rights are safe in the United States because, at the moment, it would be impossible to try to take firearms away from legal owners.

Moreover, registries aren't actually useful in solving crimes at all, which leaves tracking and confiscation as the only reasons for their implementation.

Quite frankly New Orleans killed any support gun registration might have ever had after Katrina gving people a convenient American example of what might follow: New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes

The upshot here is that due to being born to an American citizen (regardless of where the birth happened) and Canada's birthright citizenship, he's entitled to be both President of the US and Prime Minister of Canada.

          • That's only if he's a naturalized citizen. John McCain was born in Panama, but to American citizens.

            • I still don't get it. If the government is so incompetent that it can't provide health care, what makes you idiots think that they would be successful in taking away your guns?

The government is either incompetent or super efficient. It can't be both.

              • Or, alternatively, going down a list and stopping by everyone's door is way easier than providing ****ing health care?

Also, I never said it would be successful--plenty of people would hold onto their guns, just illegally, and the simple fact of it being illegal would be detrimental.

The government's goal, disarming the population, wouldn't be achieved, but it would successfully interfere with ordinary legal gun ownership.

                • Arms control can work and would be a wonderful thing.

Not many people are able to find RPG's or anti-tank rockets.

The same should and could be true with guns.

                  • That has more to do with anti-tank weapons being expensive, and not particularly useful for anything but blowing up tanks. You can't rob a bank with an RPG.

I believe the government only has a list of vehicles registered for use on the highways. People who own vehicles for the express purpose of use on their private property have no requirement to register them. Taken to its logical conclusion, people intending to own firearms for use on their own private property would/should not be required to register either.

Incompetent but every so often you get a hack who desires to use the machinery of governent to punish his enemies.

So? The people in New Zealand must be in support of this. Or do you think that any law that passes, even with ample support, that is against your wishes is tyranny?

Gun rights are safe in the US because at the moment a majority of the population are in favour of them. If 2/3rds of the population was against gun ownership, no registration or lack of it would affect the final outcome, at most it will take longer for the guns to be removed from circulation.

Bottom line is, do you believe your government represents you? Would a popular disarming succeed if a majority of the population was against it?

Strawman much? The main use for a gun registry isn't solving crimes, but making it much harder for a gun to end up in the illegal market. And before you jump up with the usual 'illegal guns will still be out there' and all that ****, well duh. But with that argument, you should also legalize and unrestrict the sale of all kinds of drugs, even prescription drugs... It will take time, but it won't happen unless you take action.

The canal zone was US territory so that example isn't relevant.

To a point. On the other hand, the original intent was to prevent tyranny of majority from taking away specific rights as deliniated in the Bill of rights.
