I would say that you hit the nail on the head with the bit about religious nuts. Iranian opposition to America wouldn't be anywhere near as fierce if Iran were Christian. Hell, we did absolutely horrible things in the Philippines, from the massacres after the Spanish-American War, to our support for Marcos. But I doubt that you face the sort of hostility that you'd encounter in Iran. As much as people resent American interference, they're a long way from being hateful. If Catholic bishops were out there urging the faithful to destroy America, things would a lot different.
