World's first lab-grown burger is eaten in London

The world's first lab-grown burger was cooked and eaten at a news conference in London on Monday.

Scientists took cells from a cow and, at an institute in the Netherlands, turned them into strips of muscle that they combined to make a patty.

Researchers say the technology could be a sustainable way of meeting what they say is a growing demand for meat.

Critics say that eating less meat would be an easier way to tackle predicted food shortages.

The burger was cooked by chef Richard McGeown, from Cornwall, and tasted by food critics Hanni Ruetzler and Josh Schonwald.
Stem cells Cells cultured in the lab develop into muscle, which can then be fashioned into a patty

Upon tasting the burger, Austrian food researcher Ms Ruetzler said: "I was expecting the texture to be more soft... there is quite some intense taste; it's close to meat, but it's not that juicy. The consistency is perfect, but I miss salt and pepper."

She added: "This is meat to me. It's not falling apart."

Food writer Mr Schonwald said: "The mouthfeel is like meat. I miss the fat, there's a leanness to it, but the general bite feels like a hamburger.

"What was consistently different was flavour."

It apparently didn't have much taste due to the lack of fat, but if they figure out how to do that, I'm in

I suspect we'll have significant amounts of this available in my lifetime - perhaps even within 20 years (and I mean "will be carried nationally in Jewel/Albertson's/Safeway/etc. as a staple", not just in a few stores).

Heinz is an abomination that shouldn't be allowed

                Ok, apology accepted

We have a local ketchup branded Beauvais that can be used in cooking - that isn't possible with heinz because of it's large content of sugar. I tried it once and got large pools of melted sugar floating on top.

Heinz 57 isn't actually ketchup; it's a variety of steak sauce. Undoubtedly contains sugar, but it's not the same thing (closer to Worcestershire sauce or A1).

Also, you can certainly cook with ketchup that contains corn syrup (more likely than sugar ). You just have to expect it and plan for it. You'd have to try really hard to get "large pools of melted sugar" at the top...

Fruit and vegetables don't bother me. The thought of an artificial steak is an abomination.
