And the Governor General is appointed by the Queen solely on advice of the government. So you're not getting any mileage out of having a queen.

The GGs refer to the Palace from time to time, and the PMs can also go over their heads to the Palace if there is an impasse.

    • Also from time to time some group of special interest wing nuts will write the Queen appealing for her to do something or other. Her staff write polite replies referring complaints to the domestic governments.

It's sort of the BBB of government.

Yeah, that's what I thought - just curious - if belgium was to break up, would it be three new coutries or would the parts join their specific countries ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

          • Nuts. If Belgium were to fall apart, there'd still be Belgium.

            • How is it that Belgium's unification is actually dependent on the monarchy?

              • Belgium has two main population groups: walloons and flemings, and they don't get along. Flanders and Wallonia are both semi-autonomous from each other, so I think what he's saying is that if there were no king they would separate and become independent countries because essentially the king's personal union of the two holds them together.

                • Isn't Belgium pretty much conglomerated with Luxembourg and the Netherlands though?

                    I don't think so.

Reagan's service in the military might not have been particularly heroic but the same is true for almost anyone in something like quartermaster or other rear area stuff, which comprised half the army then and more now.
                    Yeah, but making movies?

The people breaking the Japanese naval codes were in relatively cushy jobs not getting shot at but what they did was still military service.
Hey! You leave naval intelligence out of this! My great aunt won the second world war working in naval intelligence!

                      • some people who support monarchies argue they are more stable than republics, less prone to civil war or revolution

Did she storm U-571 with the other Americans to bravely capture the Enigma codes?

It's not quite that stark. The practical side of a complete dissolution would be an nightmare, which is why you guys shouldn't expect it any time soon. But as a matter of principle, there's ultimately no good reason for Belgium to exist other than the monarchy. It's the same way with the UK.

                            • So countries that don't have monarchies, there's no reason for them to exist?
