Helen Thomas, the trailblazing reporter and columnist who was known as the "Dean of the White House Press Corps," has died at 92.

The Gridiron Club, the press group that counted Thomas as its first female member, announced the news in an email, Politico first reported. The Associated Press said Thomas had been sick "for a long time."

Thomas was the first woman to become a chief White House correspondent for a wire service, and the first to join—and lead—the White House Correspondents' Association. She served as White House correspondent for United Press International (UPI) for 39 years. She then moved to Hearst, where she became a columnist with increasingly open political views, though she retained her prime spot at White House press briefings.

Thomas covered every president from Kennedy to Obama. She was the only woman who traveled with Richard Nixon on his trip to China. She was the person who ended every presidential press conference by saying, on behalf of her fellow journalists, "Thank you, Mr. President."

By the end of her career, her chair in the White House briefing room had been adorned with, as the New York Times wrote, "a small plaque with her name, the only seat in the briefing room designated by the name of a person, not a news organization."

Thomas became known for her tough, relentless questioning of presidents and press secretaries. It was not an uncommon sight to see a president repeatedly saying, "Helen—Helen—Helen," as he tried to get a word in edgewise. She became a special foe of the Bush administration, whose policies she openly loathed. President Bush famously refused to call on her at press conferences for years at a time, perhaps due to exchanges like this one, as described by the AP:

In March 2005, she confronted Bush with the proposition that "your decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis" and every justification for the attack proved false.

"Why did you really want to go to war?" she demanded.

When Bush began explaining his rationale, she interjected: "They didn't do anything to you, or to our country."

"Excuse me for a second," Bush replied. "They did. The Taliban provided safe haven for al-Qaeda. That's where al-Qaeda trained."

"I'm talking about Iraq," she said.
It was that outspokenness that led to Thomas's resignation from her White House job in 2010. After she was recorded on tape saying she thought Israelis should "get the hell out of Palestine," the ensuing controversy forced her to step down.

A very special lady who didn't deserve what happened to her in 2010. Her kind of journalist is becoming ever more rare these days. She will be missed.

And yes, she absolutely did deserve what happened to her, the anti-semitic fuckface.

Oh yeah, I better bump the dead pool thread. She's on my list.

THIS is why she lost her job at the white house press corps. Not her comments on Iraq.

Helen Thomas wants apology from Obama, reasserts Zionists own White House, Congress
Nine months after anti-Semitic remarks forced her to resign from her post as a White House correspondent, Helen Thomas remains unrepentant, demanding an apology from President Barack Obama and defending her assertion that Zionists own the White House and Congress.

Speaking at the annual spring convention of College Media Advisers in New York City on Tuesday, Thomas said, "I want an apology from the president," Editor and Publisher reported Friday.

Obama criticized her comments in an interview during a Jewish Heritage Month celebration event at the White House last year when Thomas said Israelis should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go back home to Poland, Germany, America and everywhere else."

Thomas, who was the oldest and longest-serving member of the White House press corps, resigned the following week.

The president later called Thomas' comments "offensive," saying, "She made the right decision [to resign]."

In an interview with Playboy magazine for their April edition, Thomas said she knew she had "hit the third rail" when she began speaking about Jews in the interview last June.

"I've had it up to here with the violations against the Palestinians," Thomas said. "Why shouldn't I say it? I knew exactly what I was doing -- I was going for broke. I had reached the point of no return. You finally get fed up."

The 90-year-old, who revealed former President Jimmy Carter called her to express sympathy following her resignation, also told Playboy she stood by a speech she made last year in which she said, "We are owned by the propagandists against the Arabs. There's no question about that. Congress, the White House and Hollywood, Wall Street, are owned by the Zionists."

"I want you to look at the Congress that just came in," Thomas told the magazine. "Do you think [New York Democratic senator Charles] Schumer and Lehtinen -- whatever her name is -- in Florida [Republican representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a strong supporter of Israel] are going to be pro-Arab? No. But they're going to be very influential. Eric Cantor, the majority leader of the Republicans, do you think he's going to be for the Arabs? Hell no! I'm telling you, you cannot get 330 votes in Congress for anything that's pro-Arab."

But Thomas became emotional when the reporter asked what she thought her obituary would say.

"Oh, I know what they're going to say: 'anti-Semite,'" said Thomas, beginning to cry. "I'm a reporter. I know damn well what they're going to say because they have their print, they have their ink. They don't give a damn about the truth. They have to have it their way, and they'll be writing my obituary."

Helen Thomas was not anti-semitic for ****s sake, she just had a view on Israel that ran contrary to most Americans and it's a sad thing that you can't tell the difference. I completely disagreed with her views on Israel, but that doesn't mean I think she was anti-semitic in the slightest.

Oh and real classy of you celebrating the death of not only another human being, but a woman who fought tooth and nail her entire career to bring transparency to politics and in the process opened the doors to equality in journalism. Grow up.

Oh my god. How can you read that and not see the anti-semitism? You're hopeless. She thought the Jews need to pack up and "get the hell out of Israel". She thought that "zionists" control all aspects of our media and government. She promoted the conspiracy theory of Jewish world domination. Don't be an idiot.

Oh and given that her parents were Lebanese, it's hardly surprising that she might have had a view on Palestine that was different to most Americans.

Yeah, that's not evidence against her raging antisemitism.

Countdown until Alby, our resident Lebanese-American and forum antisemite chimes in beginning now.

From what I've read, she promoted the idea that the pro-Israel lobby had an oversized influence over America, which is hard to argue with. As a strong pro-Israel supporter it happens to work in favour of my own beliefs, but I can also recognize the pernicious effects it often has on America. Voicing any critisism of Israel is enough to cause a huge uproar in the US, and when you think about it that is a pretty dangerous position to find yourself in when you're talking about a foreign power.

She once claimed at a talk in I think Minneapolis that "Congress, the White House, Hollywood, and Wall Street are all run by Jews."

                    This is textbook ZOG ****.

                    She was a ****ing idiot.

The pro-israel lobby doesn't have an outsize influence on America, America is just very pro-israel. The idea that the "israel lobby" controls our politics is a vile viewpoint that is a direct descendant of the Judeo-Masonic conspiracy theory.

Saying that we should ban Christmas celebrations would cause a bit of an uproar too, for the same reason, i.e. not Protocols of the Elders of Zion crap which Thomas subscribed to.

By the way, I would like to call attention to two things: firstly, this is example #[I've lost count] of kentonio making an ass of himself thinking he knows a damn thing about the United States, and second, kentonio calls himself a conservative and he's laying on the praises for a decidedly FAR LEFT liberal journalist.

No it's not, there is an absolutely huge Israel lobbying body that influences US politics and numerous extremely rich individuals like Sheldon Adelson who are more than happy to contribute heavily to try and ensure potential political candidates maintain their strong support for Israel. There is nothing untoward about this considering how US politics work, pro-Israel people have as much right as anybody else to support candidates who will further their interests. It needs to be recognized however that Israel is not a state of America, it's a foreign power. Offering absolute unconditional support to another country can lead to some dangerously twisted loyalties.

It's also more than a little worrying that when this is pointed out, people fall back on the accusations of anti-semitism and conspiracy theories.

Did you just equate voicing any critisism of Israel with banning Christmas? What the **** is that even supposed to mean?

I'm saying they would be about as popular policies.

The only reason the Israel lobby has any influence at all is because Americans sympathize with Israel. It's not jew gold buying off congressmen. I'm not Jewish. I'm Catholic. I support Israel. So does pretty much everyone else I know.
