I guess this proves that Civ players all have above average intelligence...

          ze germans lost ze war...
All B.S. and egos asid, the questions are can the army do the job of the marines? Can the marines(given the same manpower) do the job of the Army?
I personally think the army could do the marines job...but why bother...I'm a sucker for tradition..So let's keep this specialized fighting force.
I don't think that the marines can take on the armys role because the marines are specialized.
As far all Marines receiving infantry training...so what..unless you train these skills on a regular basis, you lose the skill.
The Army has Modern Army Combatives and the Marines have Marine Corp Martials Arts Program...In the end a fight is going to come down to training, determination, strength/firepower and skill

Keep in mind every marine does NOT get this training on a regular basis. Just like all soldiers don't get army combatives training

Got back from our patrolling FEX. Got helo-inserted via CH46's, conducted a day patrol led by me, the next patrol leader set up a night ambush, then we hoofed it back to our LZ with NVG's and did a night extract via CH46's.

It's not all fun, though. Body army, gear, and M249 weigh down on you, especially on the hikes. We hiked back to camp with 120-140lbs of gear (really wearing SAPI carriers under our ILBE packs is what sucks, not the weight itself) and on the last hill, I looked around and saw only about 8 of us from our platoon of 46 making it to the top. We held up to let some catch up and 22/46 finished in the main body.

Unfortunately, we have to do a platoon remedial hike on Monday with more gear (gas mask, extra boots, etc.). Frustrating for us handful who put out. Screwy incentives.

Scary moment when our student platoon sergeant was running up and down our strung out line trying to get people to catch up and close the gaps until he collapsed unconscious with a 103 degree core temperature.

Did you have the 249 or did someone else?

The poor ***** who gets the 240 is the one you should really feel sorry for.

We can't afford plates so it's all just LBVs, it owns.

I'm a SAW gunner so I have a 249. We have one per fireteam.

We have two designated 240 gunners in our platoon. One carried one of the SAW's on this hike as a progression and he fell back. I don't think he knows what he'll be getting into.

You can't fathom the difference between SAPI's and a ****ing LBV. You put it on and a SAPI doesn't feel bad until you factor in that you're carrying a weapon, ammo, over a gallon of water in your canteens and camelback, an assault pack with MRE's, e-tool, sandbags, and other random stuff, and you're doing an 8 hour patrol through the highlands after 5 hours of sleep then bounding when you make contact.

You will develop a knot in your lower back and your shoulders are sheared from SAPI's.

And the SAPI's plain do not fit well with the ILBE packs over them. The waist strap that is so critical for weight distribution of a pack in excess of 100lbs gets driven loose by the plate carrier so you end up bearing the pack's weight on your shoulders. The weight will be on your hips for about 15-20 minutes before it's driven loose.

One thing about that hike, though. We have a female attorney who's about 5'2" and 120lbs who finished the hike with the main body, carrying over her bodyweight in a pack half her height. It does put some perspective on what putting out can do when you have 5'10" 170lb men falling back and she's trucking.

I've held a SAPI plate and those things are ****ing heavy. You are right that I probably can't comprehend how bad it is.

That woman, the lawyer, is legitimately impressive.
