Tory party at prayer? I thought the main concern about the CoE is that they were a bunch of lefties? It's not like ole Rowan Williams was a big conservative.

It's what they were traditionally known as- the C. Of E., that is. Think of all those Trollope novels.... Thatcher's supposed Methodism (as about as apparent or real as my adherence to the Cult Of Baal) were what supposedly set her apart from a lot of Old Guard Tories- and the hierarchy of the C. Of E.- who were frequently agin her on pressing social issues, such as youth unemployment, the Miners' Strike, the rise of public begging, homelessness....- the kinds of thing you'd expect a truly Christian sect to be concerned with.

Good to see the mother country catching up with the colonies.

I'm sure the UK's gay population really loves its reigning men now. Assuming they didn't already.

I'd happy retain the Lords if it was a choice between that or the US Senate.

Is the problem with the US Senate the fault of the institution or the voters?

                            Both I guess.

One is a revising chamber that carefully weighs issues and has a strong record of returning well balanced amendments and acting as a stabalizing influence on the lower house. The other is the US Senate.

The problem is with the states caving to the idea of popular election of the senate. Not only did it severely cut back on the states' power in the national government, it also made state elected officials much less important, leading to the state's own citizens paying less attention to them.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
