I know that I have at least one ancestor who owned a decent bit of property in Louisiana, and who defended his state against Lincoln's hordes. I'm guessing, since no other white person I've ever met is descended from slave owners, that he must have owned every last one.

You can check the 1860 census records...they list who owned slaves and who didn't. I imagine some Southerners would be quite shocked at what they see.

Many Canadian slave owners, were there ? I recall reading that a great many of those who fought on the British side in the war against the American rebels and who were of African descent chose to emigrate to Canada- Nova Scotia in particular. They also helped populate the new colony of Sierra Leone.

A lot of people who preferred the Brits to the Jacobins moved North.
The Loyalists (or their descendants) still have not received the compensation promised them by the tax evading French trading Yankees. Supposedly the Duke of Westminster (absurdly rich thanks to inherited properties in Central London) was asked by the Yankee gov'mint to give up the freehold of their embassy in Grosvenor Square.
He said, o.k., provided they gave him back what they took from his ancestors in the former colonies..... end of discussion.
