I bought Civ5 at launch and even dutifully kept buying DLC hoping that would encourage them to patch it up properly but when that didn't happen I more or less gave up on the game as flawed beyond redemption. Fast forward two expansion packs later and I finally got around to buying the expansions on steam for a discounted price and I've played two games this week. The game is no longer as shallow and superficial as it used to be but it remains a turd with its fundamental design flaws (like 1UPT, low production rates, inability to change governments, inability to really play a meaningful MP game at a decent speed, etc...) remaining unchanged. It's just a major step backwards compared to Civ4.

All they needed to do was update the graphics on Civ4 and maybe switch to a hex map but they just couldn't leave well enough along insisting of fixing things which weren't broken thus ending up with a worse game.

In my research regarding Civ V, I've encountered a mixed bag when it comes to reviews — especially for the Mac version of the game, which apparently still has some relatively serious flaws. But, it's still early in the process, so I'm not going to rule it out yet. After all, one cannot let a dozen or so "glass-is-half-full" types at the Apple App Store dictate whether or not I'm going to buy the game.

Never played V or considered getting it. Every change they made sounds abysmally stupid, with the arguable exception of hexes. Also, I've heard very little in the way of good reviews from people I trust. The requirements are way above my old PC as well, but if it had sounded good enough I might have been tempted.

Anyway, IV is awesome and you should give it another shot. And welcome back.

Regarding the option of trying Civ IV again, well, I might have an enviable problem: My computer might be too new for it. I'll check the computer specs and game specs to see what's up there.

Hello Gatekeeper, great to see you still around. I don't post as much anymore, just stop in and make occasional remarks. I play CTP original and BTS. Occasionally fire up Civ II. Hello Elok! I play BTS all the time, I really got turned off by a single unit thingey CIV started in CIV 5 and just couldn't get into it.

Speaking of Civ4, can anybody come up with a plausible-sounding reason why you need civil service to build macemen? I'm sure they just needed a tech in the appropriate era, the incentive to research CS seemed a little light, and so they put two and two together, but I always wonder that every time I play Civ. "So...I can use the Bureaucracy civic, that makes sense. Farms spread irrigation, I guess some central planning is required to rig that. Also, macemen. Because it takes a dedicated civil servant to whale on someone with a spiky ball on a chain." Not that I'm losing sleep over this, but it's weird.

Also, what are some good mods? Besides Planetfall, I got that.

Any good Civ IV mods? I like medieval stuff, as a general rule. I'm open to fantasy or sci-fi, too.

Just bumping random stuff here; I started an Italian ice hours ago, had to put it backin the freezer when my kid changed his mind about going to sleep. If he sees it, he won't rest till he gets it, and that'll mean brushing his teeth again, and that's like wrestling with a ferret. So I'm staying up late to finish sucking down a hunk of orange-flavored sugar water. This is called parenting.

Hey, some of us still play the Apolyton democracy team for the multi forum Civ4 MP game. Poly is currently in second place points wise.

Also I bought Civ5 and wish I didn't.
