The nice thing is, I'm sure American wild west justice will prevail and Zimmerman, who has set himself up as the fastest gun in Florida, will be shot. Dead. I'm sure his killer will get a fair trail.
Paranoia, big destroyer... Maybe Martin was a bit paranoid, both of them probably had that in common. But I'd rather have a gun and use it than let some dude spill my brains onto a sidewalk

Then maybe you shouldn't have been watching him as if he was a criminal?

To be honest, I've never understood neighborhood watch programs (regardless of this case). They always seem to me like great examples of the idea that the last person you should hand power to is someone who goes out of their way to get it, even if that power is only in their own head. I understand that they're generally taught to observe and report, and that Zimmerman's first mistake was deviating from that, but the sort of self-appointed quasi-power that results leads to situations like this. Usually the result is much less severe, but I'm pretty sure Martin doesn't attack a real cop in this situation.

People know how to respond to power and know how to act around peers; it's the gray areas where bad things happen.

      • Neighborhood watch has no official authority. It's just a bunch of people get together because there's too much crime, and the neighborhood association sponsors a program where people watch each other's houses so they don't get burglarized. There's nothing wrong with it. It's not "power," it's "whose turn is it to look out the window and call the cops."

It's hard to hear you over the sound of the giant victim complex you're building.

As I said, I know there is no official power. But there is a perception of power for some who do it, and frankly, some de facto power to go with it. Reporting to the police is a power position for the simple fact that you always have the option not to report to the police. Combine that with the idea that they have been given a socially-acceptable excuse to watch their neighbors closely and judge what they are doing, of course it's a position of power. The problem is that people will disagree on how much power is behind it (just like you have). Little good comes from that.

                  • It isn't the semantic difficulty of your writing that makes it nonsensical.

It was completely devoid of meaning on any level which a reasonable person could transact upon.

                          • The clearest meaning I can determine is that he is saying that neighborhood watches are powerful because they don't just ignore crimes.

And this is a little less clear, but it seems that he is saying that an organized method of communicating with the police is too much "authority" for your everyday citizen to possess.

I think he was edging towards making a point about the hypothetical surveillance state, but that's purely conjecture on my part.
