There is no argument in favor of giving weapons to barbaric Muslims who gut people alive. We should wait until they are done fighting and bomb them from above.

It's nice to see that she's writing her own material.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”
"Capitalism ho!"

I would say that, historically, rebel leaders have fallen into one of three categories:
A. Intelligent, well-educated and genuinely idealistic people, typically of the upper-middle class, who may or may not be effective but have a definite plan and a sincere desire to help their country.
B. Intelligent people who lack principles, may or may not be educated, but have the sense to recognize their own best interests and are competent to keep a country stable/functional enough to enable a life of luxury for themselves.
C. People who excel at the kind of sudden, brutal, decisive violence required to attain power, are motivated by a narrow-minded ideology if they believe in anything at all, have no other skill to speak of, and would not know genuine leadership if it bit them on the ass.
The Syrian rebels, from all I've heard, belong squarely in group C. I can't fathom why it should be in our nation's interests, or anyone's, to support them.

Seriously: while lots of people I know have bemoaned the evil of the rebels' ongoing persecution of Christians and Allawites (probably others too), I haven't heard anybody note how very ill it bodes for their competence. Religious persecution is dumb and unproductive at the best of times; that they are wasting time and lives on pogroms now, while fighting for their survival, means they either have no control over their men or have their heads so far up their butts that they can see their tonsils.
This, of course, is not intended to downplay the moral repugnance of their actions. But I don't believe we've ever had a genuinely moral foreign policy, and it would be naive to expect one now.

Originally posted by Dr Strangelove View PostThe problem is that the Syrian rebel groups are a mixed bag, with some falling into category A, some falling into category B and some falling into category C. Guerilla warfare being a brutal endeavor, those falling into category C are gaining street cred because they appear to be better at getting the job done.
