I can't see how it's hypocrisy to point out that it's pretty crazy that people living in the epicentre of Tornado Alley don't have better adequate shelters against these kind of events...
I'm not the only one asking the obvious question to a non American: Why so few storm shelters in Tornado Alley hotspot?But apparently for a settlement slap bang in the middle of Tornado Alley, they don't seem terribly well equipped to deal with them: No cellars; flimsy looking buildings etc. That's what really surprised me about the casualty numbers, especially nowadays - surely many more lives could have been saved otherwise?
It's not often I agree with an Israeli, after all...One Israel-based blogger, Laura Rosbrow, says that she cannot understand why people in Oklahoma do not have more publicly-funded shelters.
In Israel, Rosbrow says, bomb shelters are located "within blocks of every residence".
"In Israel, you feel like the country is giving you peace of mind," writes Rosbrow on her blog. "Isn't that the way it should be?" (look Elok, I got all your smileys in!)
Your country is ****ed up, because apparently human life is cheap and 'market driven' and woe betide the govmint to do something 'socialist' by building community shelters and meddling in the affairs of a bunch of under educated midwestern rednecks who, because they believe in God, don't think it'll happen to them - until it does and a lot more end up dying than really should, i.e. none...!
America is the bastion of climate change denial, so I guess it's only apt that: "They that sow the wind, shall reap the whirlwind"...
