  • How common is dipping?

Never saw anyone dip before. It's unknown in the North. Here, everyone's walking around with spit-filled Dr. Pepper bottles. Is it just a Marine Corps thing or is this a Southern thing? All the stores here in Northern Virginia sell the ****.

All the baseball players in rural PA were avid snuff users back when I was there.

          Look like a redneck
Carry around a bottle of nasty spit all day

What I don't get is how word is we're not authorized to have trail mix, jerky, or any other non-MRE food in the field but dip is okay. Wut?

            Haha!

Idiotic and non-nonsensical policies like this only serve to weaken the legitimacy of authority.

About half the MS4 AROTC cadets in my bn do it but I've never encountered it anywhere else. Only military/cadets/veterans. It's a pretty ****ing stupid habit and I tell them that freely.

It's not a Marine Corps thing or a southern thing; it's a military thing.

Scroll down to "TABLE 2. Prevalence of current smokeless tobacco use among adults,* by state/area --- Behavioral Risk Surveillance System, United States, 2009" and you will find out how common "dipping" is in every state of the union with a 95% confidence interval provided. You're welcome.

I don't think it's a southern thing? The stores sell it in Pittsburgh too.

It's not Alabama in between...it's more like Ohio in between.

Oh I forgot to post the pretty map:

Smoking might be "a southern thing" but "smokeless tobacco use" is not as concentrated in the south. I'd call it a "rural ****hole thing". I guess because if you're in the middle of nowhere nobody is going to complain about spitting tobacco everywhere.

This entirely explains its prevalence in the military.
