"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

    • It would be nice if government agencies could just report the facts and do their jobs without having to worry about how republicans are going to twist it.

I pretty much agree, but I put it on unicorns and glitter.

          That's the problem.
If you want to use the deaths of four Americans, and cheapen their deaths, to score political points against the Obama administration, go ahead. Just remember that it's a reflection of your character.

          • What do you not get? These were representatives of our country, and our President. Retaliatory pieces were in place to rescue them and were pulled back.
Obama immediately went into denial while Ms. Clinton asked the thought-provoking question of "What does it matter?", and you have no problem with it?
You call that cheapening? I call you an ignorant SOB.

            • Gates: Benghazi Critics Have 'Cartoonish' View of Military Capability

Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates forcefully defended the Obama administration on Sunday against charges that it did not do enough to prevent the tragedy in Benghazi, telling CBS' "Face the Nation" that some critics of the administration have a "cartoonish impression of military capabilities and military forces."

Gates, a Republican who was appointed by then-President George W. Bush in 2006 and agreed to stay through more than two years of President Obama's first term, repeatedly declined to criticize the policymakers who devised a response to the September 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.
"Frankly, had I been in the job at the time, I think my decisions would have been just as theirs were," said Gates, now the chancellor of the College of William and Mary.

"We don't have a ready force standing by in the Middle East, and so getting somebody there in a timely way would have been very difficult, if not impossible." he explained.

Suggestions that we could have flown a fighter jet over the attackers to "scare them with the noise or something," Gates said, ignored the "number of surface to air missiles that have disappeared from [former Libyan leader] Qaddafi's arsenals."

"I would not have approved sending an aircraft, a single aircraft, over Benghazi under those circumstances," he said.

              • I didn't say that we had a permanent force there for this situation. I said it was in place at the time, which it was, so FU, too.
Actually, you're more obnoxious than Fun. In theory, you should have a better frame of reference, so you suck more than he does. What an honor.

                • Have you been drinking, dude? You seem to under the misunderstanding that Gates made those statements just to rebut you or something. Though, I admit, his statements do pretty much blow one right wing talking point out of the water. That some how the consulate could have been relieved faster some how (despite Republicans in Congress voting to slash security for embassies and consulates AND not having any military forces in the region which could have possibly helped at all).

The fact that you're pretending that you really care about the deaths of those who were killed at Benghazi is cute.

                    • To have GWB's Secretary of Defense on Face The Nation today, firmly defending the Benghazi decisions made by the military, by Hillary, and by Obama, is actually kind of a big deal.

I didn't see it. Did he defend the decisions made by Hillary and Obama in the run up to the attack (ignoring and rejecting requests for additional security at that facility from the people on the ground, the previous attacks both on US and Western powers in the city, and the build up of AQ aligned forces in the weeks before)? Because that would be a big deal.

                        • I don't watch the Sunday chat shows. The transcript I read seemed to be about the attack itself, immediately before and after, and about the current hearings. He basically said he would have made the same decisions that the US command team did, and characterized some of the "why didn't we do this/that?" posturing as "cartoonish."

You can presumably link to some evidence that the President of the United States of America and the Secretary of State of the United States of America now include in their job descriptions 'approving minor details of embassy security'?

However, if you were to send off a plane on a scare'm-with-noise mission, the stuka bomber probably would have made the best option.

Everything I've learned since the attack, tells me that they were killed mostly by decisions made by the US before the attack.
