Pretty cool article in Slate. The story explains how when given two short quizzes, one about science and one about religion, the bulk of the sample were shockingly ignorant of both. The sample wasn't large (seems like 1,500 IIRC) but it was random. If you want to try your luck without sorting through the article, here is the science quiz and here's the religion test.
