To be fair, rah was right; that is how it works in theory.

Yes, I took extra care to include the phrase in theory. I can just imagine the horror of our founding fathers if they could see what their grandiose ideas turned into.

But that's what happens when you allow idiots to vote (which they attempted to avoid, badly though). While I agree the dangers of giving someone the power to decide who can or can not vote are very real, it's hard not to speculate what kind of government we would have if people had to prove they were knowledgeable enough to vote. Of course, at least that might keep some of the right wing fundies from voting.

Not being responsible for wildlife preservation or management I'm happy to say I've absolutely no idea. Do you have a deep involvement in these areas which would qualify you to direct their research to the most effective areas possible, or did you perhaps just see a headline about damn liberals throwing money away looking at duck penises and get all huffy?

Lamar Smith is a Republican in the pocket of big oil and big polluters like the Koch brothers are upset that their anti-science denier crap isn't gaining any traction outside of the far right and worse, from their point of view, scientists use tax money to do real science which debunks most of their anti-science claims. Thus Lamar wants to change the rules about peer review needed to get science funding from the government so that Koch brothers' denier nonsense can be pushed as "science" even though none of it would ever make it through the real peer review process. Lamar Smith also wants to make it illegal, yes, illegal, for scientists to use public money to verify other people's results mostly because the actual scientists keep debunking their agenda. Thus they want that to stop.

The rest of us, the ones who are interested in the actual truth, should not be trying to under mine actual scientific research. This is just more of the Republican war on science which they've been waging for decades now.

Just think of all the useful applications that came from the Gay Bomb research the US government did. I can't think of any but they surely must be there.
