Requiring the NSF to certify that every grant goes to something big is exactly the opposite of how it should work. The big things are taken care of by the market. The small things are what's important, and the breadth of research so we have knowledge we can later build on (and perhaps find some things by accident). We can _have_ the alzheimers research Obama wants, because we did lots of 'pointless' research five or ten years ago that means we now know a lot more about the brain than we did before.

I could deal with not funding research into duck penises.

Both sides do have some anti-science people in their ranks but the big difference is the anti-science folks control the Republican Party while the anti-science hippies on the left get laughed at for babbling about homopathy and new age crystals.

Cool, you meanwhile can pay us for the lives we spent fighting the Germans and Japanese allowing you time to rearm and eventually join in feeling like conquerors. Oh and for the lives the commonwealth sacrificed for the US in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and various other conflicts over the years.

You know, congressmen actually represent their constituents very well. I'm not sure what makes you think otherwise. They're extremely sensitive to what their constituents think. That's why Obama can't just say PASS GUN CONTROL! and make it happen. It's why Marco Rubio can't just say PASS IMMIGRATION REFORM! and make it happen. People in different areas have different views, and members of the same party can have very different social values based on where they live. It's also why we get a ton of local pork.
