Why do the Koch Brothers support PBS?Originally posted by Dinner View PostThe Young Turks had a video on this recently.
Lamar Smith is a Republican in the pocket of big oil and big polluters like the Koch brothers are upset that their anti-science denier crap isn't gaining any traction outside of the far right and worse, from their point of view, scientists use tax money to do real science which debunks most of their anti-science claims. Thus Lamar wants to change the rules about peer review needed to get science funding from the government so that Koch brothers' denier nonsense can be pushed as "science" even though none of it would ever make it through the real peer review process. Lamar Smith also wants to make it illegal, yes, illegal, for scientists to use public money to verify other people's results mostly because the actual scientists keep debunking their agenda. Thus they want that to stop.
The rest of us, the ones who are interested in the actual truth, should not be trying to under mine actual scientific research. This is just more of the Republican war on science which they've been waging for decades now.

Not being responsible for wildlife preservation or management I'm happy to say I've absolutely no idea. Do you have a deep involvement in these areas which would qualify you to direct their research to the most effective areas possible, or did you perhaps just see a headline about damn liberals throwing money away looking at duck penises and get all huffy?Originally posted by DinoDoc View PostName one based on the purpose of the study.

Congresspersons represent lobbyist groups far more often than they represent their constituents who voted for them.

Yes, I took extra care to include the phrase in theory. I can just imagine the horror of our founding fathers if they could see what their grandiose ideas turned into.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostTo be fair, rah was right; that is how it works in theory.
But that's what happens when you allow idiots to vote (which they attempted to avoid, badly though). While I agree the dangers of giving someone the power to decide who can or can not vote are very real, it's hard not to speculate what kind of government we would have if people had to prove they were knowledgeable enough to vote. Of course, at least that might keep some of the right wing fundies from voting.

Not entirely, there was a restructuring into the post war loan.Originally posted by snoopy369 View PostErm, that's the post-WWII loan we made tofund your welfare program... do something. We wrote off the lend-lease act (see: your wiki link). Also, how about repaying us for all the lives lost defending your country?
Which country is the 'my country' you are referring to?

You know, congressmen actually represent their constituents very well. I'm not sure what makes you think otherwise. They're extremely sensitive to what their constituents think. That's why Obama can't just say PASS GUN CONTROL! and make it happen. It's why Marco Rubio can't just say PASS IMMIGRATION REFORM! and make it happen. People in different areas have different views, and members of the same party can have very different social values based on where they live. It's also why we get a ton of local pork.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostThat is ADORABLE.

Because obviously learning more about the breeding habits of wildlife couldn't possibly have any useful applications..Originally posted by DinoDoc View PostI could deal with not funding research into duck penises.

Cool, you meanwhile can pay us for the lives we spent fighting the Germans and Japanese allowing you time to rearm and eventually join in feeling like conquerors. Oh and for the lives the commonwealth sacrificed for the US in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and various other conflicts over the years.Originally posted by snoopy369 View PostErm, that's the post-WWII loan we made tofund your welfare program... do something. Or of course, you could stop being arrogant dicks and realize that we've all helped each other out plenty over the years. America needs to get over its wank fantasy about being exceptional before it disappears up it's own ass leaving China to take over.
