I'm not overly familiar with the situation but I thought the privatization of the British Railways happened in 1993 under John Major.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
Interesting. Seems the graph goes much more favorably for the UK once she resigned.
She set the UK on it's upward path. Without the destruction of the union grip on the country that wouldn't have been possible. I say this as someone who fully supports the existence of unions.
Just so nobody is confused about my opinion on the matter... I think all large human organizations suffer inherent inefficiencies due to their size. The difference between public and private is in the greater accountability and protections against abuses that representative democracy provides. Private organizations are essentially monarchies (with varying differences in structure, obviously). The discussion of public vs private is "representative democracy vs monarchy". That's all.

You're not going as far as me, I suppose. Unions are collapsing all over America and I can't contain my happiness. Putting employment preventers out to pasture
By the way, destroying the unions back in the 80s was deeply prescient. Look at how the unions have prevented countries like France and Spain from implementing reforms in the last few years. Now, if only she had been able to prevent the Euro...
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers? ){ :|:& };:
Then you're reading it wrong...look at the derivative. Where does the slope begin to increase?
It starts in 1979, so it's difficult to understand the full context. Considering the overall climb remains constant after she left office, it's almost like her presence didn't have much of an effect. I don't think executives play a large role in GDP growth. It's a bit like a baseball manager. They can really only **** things up... not do anything remarkably successful.

Yes. Once children are back in the mines... that will be cause for celebration.

At the time Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979, decades of statist policies had turned Britain into the sick man of Europe. The government owned the big manufacturing firms in industries such as autos and steel. The top individual MTRs on income were 83 percent on "earned income" and an eye-popping 98 percent on income from capital. Frequent labor strikes paralyzed transportation and led to garbage piling up in the streets of London. Much of the housing stock was government-owned. Britain had lagged other European economies for decades, growing far more slowly than most economies on the continent. Thatcher's reforms were among the most comprehensive in the world, and by the mid-1980s, Britain was growing faster than the other major European economies. - Scott Sumner

Once upon a time I had exactly that opinion until I came to understand quite how far that would tip the balance against working people. The human cost is just too high to give corporations that much power.

I have a job at a corporation. Lots of people do.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
