      • If anyone wants to know how to stop Britain being the "sick man of Europe" in the late 70s, here's how you do it-

1- Break the unions in a series of devastating showdowns stretching over six years.

2- Slash benefits and shift the burden of taxation back on the poorer sectors of the community.

        3- Strike oil.

1 and 2 are completely optional, incidentally.

Are you crazy? Norway is one of the richest countries in the world.

Sure they are. According to CIA, Norway are #4, Sweden #10, Denmark #11, Finland #15, USA #19 and yes, you are right, Iceland are only #22, so yep, those pesky socialist countries are certainly poorer than wealthy yankystan
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

That's entirely not true and you should know that.

When you look at more telling figures like household consumption, PPP wealth, etc, it's very obvious that all of those countries are poorer than the USA. Jaguar's been through this several times now.

Bull****. The UK economy post-Thatcher was based much more on things like financial services than any sort of resource extraction. Oil did not power Britain's growth. It helped, but wasn't nearly as much of a factor as the reduction in deadweight losses due to taxation and redistribution.

Pointing out that a country with lower levels of government taxation and spending has more private spending per capita (which is more or less what Jaguar keeps doing IIRC) is just trivial.

Why do so many of your defenses appeal to other posters?

Also, I called you wrong on the why part of your statement.

                          • unemployment increased with privatization?

aint no economist but wouldn't that suggest privatization was more efficient than the state or did the rates go up for other reasons?

Also, more specifically in the case of Norway, it's superficially high (like all other oil-producing countries) in GDP in that it is replacing one form of capital stock (oil reserves) with another (equities) in a way that doesn't signal much real productivity but gets counted for full market value in GDP. In essence, a kid selling his uncle's signed Rogers Hornsby rookie card for $25,000 and putting it into a savings account is not as rich as someone who can repeatedly produce $25,000 of value by working a real-life job.

Natural resources are the only thing counted this way. When we, for example, sold the Chrysler Building to investors from the UAE, this didn't get counted in our GDP.

In the sense of "value added" productivity, Norway is closer to Sweden or the Netherlands, maybe a little bit better.
