However there today an army isn't just a field force so ther are a lot of officers who don't command an actual formation, but have administrative formations. For them their rank denotes their pay scale and who where they sit on the totem pole.
      thank you

BGs are all over the map. They can be assistant division commanders, MEB commanders, members of joint staffs, deputy commanders of MAWs, and some base commanders, though typically smaller bases are commanded by O6 and larger by O8. BGs (O7) are really a pretty short term transitional rank, you usually go up to O8 in 3-4 years, or retire.

Majors are typically battalion XO and S1 through S4 positions, they can also be junior level staff in joint commands, and they also occupy senior level slots in aviation squadrons - XO, OO, AO. Majors are also typically senior aides to O9s

Combat arms includes a lot of POG and REMF slots.

Historically, though, it was LTC as executive officer of a regiment when firepower density and staffing made the regiment the primary maneuver element. Batallions, if they existed for infantry, were typically led by majors. One breechloading rifles became standard issue to infantry, and armies simply got larger, then that shifted and LTC became battalion commanders. Another part of the reason was that was the "lead from the front" era, so ideal world TO&E had two senior officers at regiment.

It's easy. You're all ****in' enemies.

It depends on scale. Each higher level command (Army commands are purely administrative, so they don't count) - Corps and Division, have their own logistics commands, and you have all sorts of both organic and independent units that support actual deployments. In the Gulf war, the senior officer in charge of supply for CENTCOM was promoted to O9 during the buildup to the actual air campaign.

Dude the reason the military sucks isn't because folks get their limbs blown off, that doesn't happen to most people.

The sacrifice that our soldiers make is that they join an incredibly retarded organization where the NCOs PT them into the ground so that their knees give way at 25 for no reason and they have people in charge who are totally retarded and they're ****ing indentured servants to the government. They spend their time picking up cigarette butts and repetitively cleaning **** that doesn't need to be cleaned. They live in a barracks. When they walk around base they have to salute officers and greet NCOs and stand at attention or parade rest for the same. If their uniform has slight errors in it they get yelled at. They have to get ****loads of haircuts, for no real reason other than to "look professional," even though most military haircuts look anything but professional.

Honestly I'm not sure where to begin or end with this train of thought but basically there's all sorts of chicken**** bull**** in the military and that's why we should respect veterans: not because they signed up to die or whatever, but the fact that even though they did, the country still treated them like absolute crap for it by making them do all sorts of menial retarded ****.

e: in other news I was smoked recently for my haircut but I think MtG with his NCO powers could figure this out on his own.

Yes. Remember that the word "lieu-tenant" comes from French and translates literally as "place holder". Back in the day when armies marched to their suicidal deaths in densely packed lines or columns the function of a company's lieutenants was to literally take the Captain's place at key points at the front of the formation and the ends of the lines in order to keep the canon fodder organized. Sergeants and corporals were interspersed within the line to apply the lash to stragglers. Ditto a "lieutenant" colonel was intended to lead the regiment at the front while the real colonel directed the formation from the rear.
"I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!
