I enjoyed ME1 very very much. I thought ME2 was terrible. Well, perhaps not terrible... but didn't finish it. I'll admit this somewhat coincided with me playing a lot less games (getting old I guess?) but the changes they made from ME1 to ME2 on the PC took out a lot of what I liked about the game.

I can't say I remember anymore exactly what the issues I had with it were; I think I disliked the way they addressed the inventory system (which wasn't great in ME1, but the change to ME2 was like Civ5's decisions on balance - throwing out the baby with the bath water) and some issues with how you control the characters. I'm not a FPS guy, so perhaps they made it closer to FPS standards (I don't recall); but either way, ME2 just wasn't that fun.

ME2's inventory was brilliant. I'm not sure what you are complaining about. The inventory in ME1 is just a massive case of whack the OCD.

ME2's combat is just a lot more fun than ME1's, in addition to being a lot more balanced. I felt the missions were a bit too linear, but hell, they were too linear in ME1 as well. At least I never got lost running around a bunch of identically styled rooms on Feros.

The conversation system is basically unchanged, and all the roleplaying stuff is still there.

If you liked ME1 for its RPG elements more than shooting, then I can understand not liking the simplifications to them in ME2.

While I agree they definitely threw out the baby with the bathwater when it came to RPG mechanics, they tightened up the gameplay when it came to firefights, as well as eliminated the goddamned Mako and copy/paste side mission garbage. The main story is better as well, with a very good Dirty Dozen vibe.

It also shared the first (and last) game's penchant for an amazing climatic series of scenes/battles, leading up to a dumb-as-balls final gameplay sequence.

            Spoiler:

Yeah... ME1 was an RPG. ME2 was... something. Not an RPG. Hence my distaste. I guess the story was good, I didn't get far enough really in - the mechanics themselves were uninteresting, so, no play.

There definitely was not enough options when levelling characters in ME2, but you get a lot more options in ME3.

ME1's inventory system is ****, not because it is RPG-like, but because it is ****. I've played a lot of RPGs and there are far more user-friendly ways to set up an inventory system.

Yes. ME3 really hit the butter zone with the RPG mechanics and the inventory system.

Do party members in ME3 unequip their goddamn stuff when they're not in your party so you don't have to ride down the SLOWEST ****ING ELEVATOR IN THE GALAXY in order to manually unequip your best shotgun BY OPENING A ****ING LOCKER so someone else can use the damn thing?

When I played the first game through the second time I was playing as a Sentinel with Kaidan and Garrus in my party. In the final boss battle I was basically just spamming him with powers constantly cause obviously it had no global cooldown. Made that fight kind of stupid easy actually, probably the only time where the sentinel is actually one of the better classes to use.

Class balance has been a problem all the way through. Infiltrator has always pretty much been better than most of the others, admittedly least so in 2. In 3, the correct class choices are Vanguard or Infiltrator. With Infiltrators you can configure yourself to basically stay invisible indefinitely and one-shot enemies in slow-motion. With Vanguards you can configure yourself to infinitely spam powers and regenerate your barrier.

I didn't like the flavor change to the sentinel after 1; I feel like they could have mad the whole "squishy with buffs" thing work instead of the mega-tank thing it took on in 2. That was kind of dumb.

Vanguard in ME3 is basically a pack of giggles. I played through it as a Vanguard and this flowchart sums it up nicely:

The whole class is completely broken. But it's amazing. You zoom across the battlefield at lightspeed, your shield is perpetually at 200%, and you can basically CHAERG!!! + nova + shotgun + heavy melee through anything.

I have never played that class; my main character was an adept, secondary was an engineer. When I replay it again, I'll give that a whirl.
