    Beer.

Why does anyone celebrate St. Patrick's day?

    Beer

No, I haven't. I'm sure there are some, though. But a majority of Irish people probably have no problem with everyone else wearing cheap plastic green bowler hats and pretending to be leprechauns as if this is a meaningful depiction of the depth and richness of Irish culture.

They celebrate Saint Patrick's day because everyone loves us - except the English.

My youngest, Patrick, is making his confirmation on this Saint Patrick's Day.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

In my vast personal experience this also occurs at Irish christenings, weddings and wakes.

I spotted one silly hat yesterday- given the atrocious weather not entirely surprising. I also had a charming Irish lad say 'Dem's well cool glasses' to me, which was rather pleasant. And yes, his accent was like dat.

Having seen some of the disgraceful images American St Patricks' day drunken scenes I can only compare it to what we in the UK call "an average saturday night".
