In Panama I put a three round burst into the face of an enemy soldier at about 20 meters. I don't think shift in aim point was much of an issue. In self-defense it's not as big an issue since you're normally at very close engagement ranges and you're talking shift in aim point on follow-on shots. It really depends how much of the wallpaper or carpets you want to replace.
Fair enough, although it's important to note that civilians don't get giggle switches. That changes things considerably at 7 yard and lower distances.
In any case, what I meant was that I'm not sure stopping is the key consideration in infantry combat, whereas it is in self-defense. Shot placement matters because there are a handful of vital organs that you have to hit in order to actually stop someone right away. Killing or suppressing is way simpler. It very well may be that stopping someone is the key issue but I wouldn't know.

Naah. .45 ACP hollowpoint has enough kinetic energy that virtually any hit will drop your target hard. They won't keep coming at you. Practically speaking, in a typical civilian self-defense situation, you're not likely to see range precision - you'd expect the shooter to be jacked on adrenalin, and the target rushing you like a berzerker is a fairly uncommon scenario.
It's not queer if you're tied to the pier
