M4 vs HK416. Discuss.

I'm sure there's somebody on this site dumb enough to defend the M4's direct impingement system.

They're both AR-15 pattern rifles.

DI isn't as bad as people think it is. If you have a suppressor, the difference in reliability is nonexistent. Modern implementations are plenty reliable too. It's lighter than a piston, and your point of aim doesn't shift nearly as much as on a piston when the action cycles, making better for quick follow-up shots.

With modern quality AR-15s, you can practically shovel dirt through the dust cover and it will still function. Even with DI, since that doesn't affect it. DI is mostly an issue when the gun isn't well maintained.

As for the HK416 vs. M4, Colt and Bushmaster have been on the low-middle end of quality for a while IMO (especially Bushmaster), and I trust the machining and manufacturing of HK way more. I would go with an HK416 but the piston isn't *that* big a deal.

If it were a hunting gun I would go with a DI system though.

Yep. You wouldn't want to give it to third world troops, but if you have a proper focus on weapons maintenance and care in the field, it's pretty much a non-issue.

Shift in aim point is more of a range issue than combat, given typical engagement ranges.

In Afghanistan our engagement distance is actually pretty big. In Iraq it was short but in Afghanistan I question the wisdom of the M4's 14.5-inch barrel. I would go with a 16-inch, using M855 ball ammo.

The shift in aim point at shorter ranges matters with respect to shot placement, but I'm not sure how important that is in infantry combat. In self defense it's very important but I don't know much about infantry tactics.

It depends on the type of fire and the specific circumstances. The 'stan is also some pretty unique terrain and enemy tactics, but you have to consider the role of the entire fire-team/squad, not just the individual rifleman.

In Panama I put a three round burst into the face of an enemy soldier at about 20 meters. I don't think shift in aim point was much of an issue. In self-defense it's not as big an issue since you're normally at very close engagement ranges and you're talking shift in aim point on follow-on shots. It really depends how much of the wallpaper or carpets you want to replace.
