Mushrooms, calamari, and chutney are all wonderful. Further more if you want to try a root beer like drink without added HFCS try Kvass which is a traditional brew from Russia which was very similar to the old style root beer and so unlike our current root beer (which is now just soda). They sell it in most ethnic markets and I buy it as a soda substitute.

I never liked the taste of them though lots of people around here grow them in their backyards. Especially Chinese people.

A few years back I joined the local mycological society and they have periodic mushroom foraging trips for members which are fun. You get to go hiking and when ever someone finds a mushroom there are several experts on hand who can help identify what species they are so that no one picks up a poisonous variety. I've only ever found a few of the common species but some people on the trips have found truffles and all sorts of exotic mushrooms. After big mushroom foraging events they'll also usually have a backyard cooking get together where people sample dishes where the mushrooms are used; you'd be surprised how many different flavors and textures you can get out different mushroom species and even how different wild versions of the same species taste compared to domestically grown ones.

If the calamari was rubbery then it was just cooked incorrectly. They're a popular bar food around here as they're often local yet cheap and you can buy a huge plate of them for about the same price as french fries. They're a good bar snack for a group of people.

It's the taste I hate, not the consistency.

It's probably best for everyone that I never try peyote.

I found porcini and oyster mushrooms and one lobster mushroom but I was new at it and was being cautious about what I picked up. Basically only going for the sure thing which I knew wouldn't be poisonous. Here's the list of common species the local myco society often finds: http://www.sdmyco.org/SpeciesList4SDNHM.htm

You get a lot more, like an order of magnitude more, species of mushrooms in Northern California simply because more rain and more woodland equals more mushrooms. Still the local mountains are pretty good and even in the low lands there are usually enough (especially oak) wood land to find some interesting stuff. Here's a video I found on youtube of some people foraging for mushroom in east county which is actually pretty densely populated.
