We managed to seamlessly merge being total dicks for centuries with doing lots of really cool stuff too. Yeah we colonized lots of natives, but we also stamped on things like the caste system and many other similar 'cultural practices'. We profited from slavery, but then led the charge to get rid of it. Yeah we owned half the world, but we also gave a lot of it back.

If you think we were horrible monsters, then try going around the world and asking everyone you meet which they prefer, the Union Jack or the Stars and Stripes. You might be surprised.
