Most people are xenophobic asshats. We shouldn't legislate based on ignorance, no matter how popular it may be.

LMFAO. Dude, I worked in Phoenix. One of my co-consultants' husbands is a 20+ year veteran of Phoenix PD. One national news report for a minute doesn't really address the issue very completely or accurately. There's no reliable info that those kidnappings have happened to people with no connection with organized crime. Occasionally the kidnappings have happened to girlfriends or family members, and, IIRC, once they got the wrong person (who was quickly dumped out unharmed a few blocks away.) Of course PPD wants to make an issue of it with the Feds. They want DHS money.

Were you whining about Eyetalyun immigrants when Gotti had Castellano knocked off? This is a variant on the same theme. BTW, most of the "enforcement" activity up here is done by locals, not migrants.

The more relevant question is "why should we?" What benefit does the US derive from such a policy?

I'm not happy with the result that we have illegal immigrants. I think it would be a much happier result if they were just legal.

I'm pretty sure that if we did secure our borders we would have just as many illegal immigrants because most of them get legal visas and just stick around when they expire.

It would probably instantly solve the housing problem, for one. Oh, and the whole right of people to freely move thing. And the fact that people moving here who are not only willing but ecstatic to do **** jobs for low pay is great for the economy.

            • Immigration is really really good for the economy. DEY TAKE ERR JERBS!!!! is actually false, who would have thought!

We actually don't need more skilled workers. The provisions allowing skilled workers to stay in the US are exactly opposite from sensible policy. We need more unskilled workers to do things like farming.

No. What we have is not consistent at all.

Employers of illegals and human traffickers are happy with the results. So it's not a total loss ...

Economic benefits. Can also stop wasting so much money on pointless walls. Not to mention it would make going to watch donkey shows in Tijuana less of a hassle ...

                        • We shouldn't stop importing overseas brainiacs until every new CS grad is working for minimum wage.

                          • A lot of folks in the CS department here ought to be working for minimum wage with the social skills and grooming that they have. Is it really too much to ask that you shave regularly, or, if you do have a beard, keep it well groomed and clean?

I'm a CS minor so I deal with those folks all the time. In my Computer Organization class there was this tremendous douche who gave a constant running commentary of the class and constantly interrupted with Paulbot political commentary, it was so annoying. He was also ridiculously fat had a neckbeard and he smelled. Really he was the complete package. And there are multiple people like that in the CS program.

                              • I will sometimes let people get away with it if they are like, 40+ year old UNIX sysadmins. In that case a scruffy beard is mandatory, preferably alongside a ponytail and receding hairline.

Also you are married, and for people who are married, go nuts, I can't accuse you of being a complete social reject.
