So how does a "caregiver" qualify to judge someone as "dangerous?" And where in the Second Amendment does it say you have a right to 30 round clips for your 50th gun? Maybe the same part of the Second Amendment where a mental health exception is carved out?

To be serious for a moment, why not have knife control? Why does the average American citizen need some fancy chef's knife? You can easily buy prepared food in any grocery store, and there are plenty of non-lethal products available to prepare food if you really want to do it yourself for some reason. Why don't we restrict the possession of knives to licensed professionals who really need them? Isn't saving even one life reason enough to keep lethal weapons out of the hands of the general public, even if it means some privileged suburbanites won't be able to pretend that they're real chefs any more?

Mandatory reporting doesn't work for most cases because the only reports mental health professionals get are from the patients themselves. If the patient doesn't want to give up their weapons then they have an additional incentive to not inform those that could assist them, and that stops them from receiving the help they need and worsens the possible outcomes.

If it is family member that is worried, then they should go to the police and inform them. That enables the mental health professional to not compromise treatment. The problem there is that this also stops the individual with the mental health issue from confiding in family members, potentially removing a support mechanism that they rely on to cope with their illness.

As it is I think that the US is ****ed when it comes to this issue.

Good question, since GOP was keeping its distance the whole time.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

So here are some pictures of one of my knives. I'm posting this because I suspect that upon seeing it, several polytubbies will insist that it should be banned.

sorry about size, I'm lazy and my camera has too many megapixels.

Also, I really need to vacuum.

Good thing the GOP aren't the only ones kissing the NRA's ass, isn't it.

Obviously you know my vote. Its a BAYONET for CHRIS SAKES who needs that.

It has only one purpose... to cut or stab things. Ok two puposes. To cut or Stab things, or open a box. OK... Three purposes, cuts, stab, or open boxes, or used as a cooking spit....

I was talking about mandatory reporting of private party gun sales. Otherwise, your nut case could just buy from private parties or do proxy buys.

There is a fundamental difference that you are overlooking. In a military situation, the other side is usually shooting back.

The goal is to put so much fire on the mother****ers that they can't.

What is to stop someone who has a 20 round magizine from reloading twice? Or, to address current proposals..4 or 5 times? The answer is...nothing! Limiting the capacity of magizines means that these murderers will simply bring more magizines.

Or more weapons, but reload or weapon change times create small windows of opportunity. To escape, for armed security to engage, for a survivor to rush and tackle the shooter. Not much of an edge (better if the shooter was limited to an Enfield .577 rifled musket ), but slightly better than nothing.

I believe that every major shooting in the last 40 years has taken place in "gun free zones", has it not?
No - off the top of my head, the McDonald's massacre in San Ysidro and the attemted assassination of Gabby Giffords were in areas that had no gun restrictions. Mall shooting in Oregon, but that's not really enough body count to be "major" There's probably others. It's not necessarily a solid correlation either, because most significant casualty shootings AFAIK are in schools or on private property (employees going postal or kill your whole family). That's probably also one of those things where someone could parse the numbers and decide where the cut off should be to count only those shootings that prove the point.

The "gun not free" zone thing is also a bit of a joke to me. I've been to city council and similar meetings in Arizona where you have ten or fifteen people in a room obviously carrying (conceal carry is a little tougher to pull off when it's 110 degrees outside.) While bored, my mind wanders, and I figured it would be pretty easy to sit in a back corner where you have good visibility, and if you wanted to make a point, you could probably take out 15-20 people just by pulling your weapons and going to work first, targeting anybody who went for their piece.

It's actually kind of unwieldy to use for opening boxes, but I use it anyway because it's awesome.

Military-style knives like bayonets are the first things we should ban. No one outside a war zone has any reasonable use for them.
