We know what it is because we choose to define it as such, we just don't know what causes it.

Let me be clear: there is a general phenotype that we call "Autism"; more precisely, there are several different phenotypes that we call "Autistic Spectrum Disorders". They may or may not be closely related to one another on a biological/biochemical/genetic basis, but they are similar on a psychological/functional basis.

It would be more precise to say "we just don't know what causes them."
