Beer does not naturally taste good. Period. I say this as someone who's never had a beer in my life, given, but it's like coffee - the taste in beer is not something the human palate evolved to enjoy. It is a taste that one enjoys because of the associations - relaxation, time with friends, college, whatever. I'm sure some beer has better elements of taste than others, but at the root of it, beer is not a drink that one simply enjoys from day one (in general, if not for every specific person).

As a result, lots of people enjoy lots of really ****y beers. It's often because when they were in college they drank whatever was available, and cheap; and at a lot of frats, especially in the midwest, that's PBR. So you associate the taste of PBR with memories of college, which often are good memories - and thus enjoy PBR well into your well-off adulthood.

I have drank PBR all of once in my life.

Any other wrong remarks you'd care to make?

PBR in the midwest has a pretty strong brand presence and is pretty cheap. Some of this is historical - back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and Ming and Rah and JR were in school, PBR was really really really cheap. It's not quite as cheap anymore I gather (since it's trying to be a "hip" beer), but it probably still has some of that following still (not that I am suggesting any of said people drink PBR).

Speaking as someone who has actually consumed beer, I like the taste of (good) beer and also enjoy the taste of (good) coffee.

I don't drink but I've always felt that beer smells kind of bad so I wouldn't be surprised if it's an acquired taste. I get the sense that this is true of a lot of alcohol. Frankly I don't give a **** how fancy something is, only how much I like it. So if Mogan David is sweeter than your fancy-ass $3k-a-bottle red wine then **** you, I'm drinking mad dog.

Except I don't drink so it's a moot point but this is a pre-emptive response to the inevitable criticism of my taste by MRT.

In Pittsburgh the cheap swill is Yuengling, by the way, not PBR. Must be a Pennsylvania thing.

actually, yuengling is my go-to beer. it's light years better than the national brand swill.

I find it hard to believe that brands like Budweiser and Coors are actually as bad as people like to say when they are so popular.

clearly you aren't thinking about the millions of dollars in sponsorship and advertising that are spent by the national brands. if yankee stadium only sells budweiser products, then it will sell a ****load of budweiser. QED. it's about having market share and telling the herd of consumers that they need Soylent Weiser at their next backyard barbecue so that they'll be rolling in the *****.

A combination of bland, inoffensive taste, low cost and mass marketing?

Twinkies are (were?) popular, are they the height of pastry quality?

Yuengling is a good choice. I usually switch between that and Stella.
